Chaplins
Furniture Store, Burners Street London
Extracts from the article magazine "RED"
published Feb 2003
The project had to be installed very quickly as it is very expensive
keeping retail premises closed in central London. We wanted to create
a minimal light and airy space, in keeping with the high end furniture
being displayed and sold there.
Future Group Lighting Design was responsible for the design of the
ceiling, wall and column niches; in essence the whole space. In
this way, many of the light sources were hidden into the surfaces
that became apart of giant lighting structures.
The shop has a huge double height entrance window allowing much
daylight to enter. The nature of the space therefore changes during
the day rather similar to how a large domestic building might do.
It was pointless to try and compete with the daylight on our budget,
so the glass has a simple red graphic stating the shop’s name.
At night-time, the subtle modern clean style of the lighting draws
people in to see the furniture pieces. The shop has had very good
feed back from the public on the design. The lighting scenes during
the day are brighter than at night-time and the staff are keen users
of this facility.
On the furniture itself there are table lamps that were chosen to
augment the furniture and provide a focus for visitors. The luminaires
change from time to time and some are even sold to the public.
