Lighting Lectures

15/03/2005 Peter Phillipson Interviews Mark Kenyon
For most meetings we either have a formal academic lecture; a demonstration
of equipment or explanations of real lighting schemes. The evening
on Tuesday 15th March was rather different. Mark Kenyon, a prolific
TV Lighting Director, whose work ranges from 'traditional' shows
such as Parkinson and Blind Date through to entertainment extravaganzas
such as 'Party at the Palace' in the grounds of Buckingham Palace
as part of the celebrations for Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee, for
which he received an RTS Lighting Award nomination.
Rather than give a lecture, he prefered to be interviewed (by Peter
Phillipson) about his approach and to demonstrate some TV Lighting
techniques.
Starting from first principles, Phillipson asked him about how
he lights talking heads, with a demonstration lighting a model.
He then built up the techniques asking about set design in TV and
how he uses crews. John Bishop demonstated the Catalyst with many
excerpts from Marks shows. Andy Stone had brought a Compulite Vector
Green desk and the use of the two pieces of equipment were discussed
in detail. New Thomas Pixel PARs and Pixel Lines including the UKs
first demonstration of 3W LEDs in TV were shown. Through out Phillipson
kept up a high level of questioning about the very subtle nuances
of TV lighting. At one point a clip from Parkinson, which Mark lights,
was shown. As Micheal Parkinson turned away from his guests to face
the camera to wind up the show, another camera remained on the guests.
At that point there are shifts in Key and Back lighing and this
was demonstrated using Peter and and Mark sitting in the same positions
as if it were a Parkinson show.
The influence of Dickie Higham and Bill Millar et al, were discussed
and the future trends in TV lighting debated.
Elstree Light and Power sponsored the event by providing lighting
equipment. AV camera were hired to allow lighting to be focused
for the camera and projected on to a screen.
It was an interesting event attended by the public and members of
the SSL (CIBSE), ILE and ALD, ESTA and PLASA members and interested
members of the public.
